Alex McCarron attends Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV, and is the 2019-2020 Eastern Region Associate Student Representative. She has presented papers at both regional and international conferences (on works ranging from the Book of Job to the short stories of Isak Dinesen). Her interests include folklore (especially ghost stories!), Russian literature, musicals, children’s books, and history.

  1. My favorite movie is Treasure Planet.
  2. I never leave the house without a pocket-sized notebook—I don’t use it very often, but it’s nice to know it’s there.
  3. If I had to eat one food for the rest of my life, it would be Sushi!
  4. Growing up, I was sure I would be either a writer or a vet.
  5. I know every word to the song “Light On,” by Maggie Rogers.
  6. The best gift I’ve ever received was the chance to go to a Broadway show in NYC with two of my closest friends.
  7. My nickname in high school was Alex—my full name is Alexandra.
  8. If you find me in the kitchen, I’m typically whipping up French toast.
  9. I’m both a reader and writer.
  10. The best paper title I ever created was “To Remember or to Forget: Memory and Apocalypse in The Slynx and Voices from Chernobyl.”

  12. My dream job is a writer.
  13. An author I truly admire is Dorothy Allison.
  14. My go-to children’s book is The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton.
  15. The destination at the top of my travel bucket list is Scotland.
  16. My favorite part of being an English Major is learning to become a more engaged, critical reader.
  17. The last book I read was My Name is Lucy Barton, by Elizabeth Strout.
  18. My favorite book is The Ocean at the End of the Lane, by Neil Gaiman.
  19. My favorite bookstore is Blue Plate Books in Winchester, VA.
  20. In 10 years, I’m betting that the big trend in literature will be impossible to predict.
  21. My first job was an intern at a summer camp.
