What am I to do with my degree?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a question that I faced when I first arrived at Stephens College as a freshman in the fall of 2013. I always answered with a cheery, \u201cEverything. I want to do everything I can with my degree.\u201d That\u2019s the beauty of being an English major; the possibilities and opportunities are endless.<\/p>\n<p>In the words of the omnipotent Dragon from John Gardner\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterworldbooks.com\/grendel-id-9780679723110.aspx\"><em>Grendel<\/em><\/a>, \u201cFind your gold and sit on it.\u201d In other words, ask yourself: \u201cWhat interests me? What do I love? Why did I choose English in the first place?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordybynature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Stephens-Harbinger-Front.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3116 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wordybynature.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Stephens-Harbinger-Front.jpg\" alt=\"Harbinger cover\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>In the beginning of my college career, I didn\u2019t know what career path to choose. I was interested in everything and took various classes including Scriptwriting and a Poetry and Fiction Workshop, but it wasn\u2019t until I joined the staff of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stephens.edu\/academics\/explore-by-school\/sois\/creative-writingenglish\/harbinger\/\"><em>Harbinger<\/em><\/a>, our literary journal, that I found my passion for editing. I realized I wanted to <em>find<\/em>, to edit, and publish, the next great American novel, not write it.<\/p>\n<p>In college, you have four incredible years to learn, grow, and discover where you want to go after graduation. You don\u2019t have to decide as soon as you arrive on campus. Take different classes that fit your interests, participate in workshops, even take an acting class. (John Hamm from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amc.com\/shows\/mad-men\">Mad Men<\/a><\/em> graduated with a BA in English from the University of Missouri-Columbia.)<\/p>\n<p>Being an English major means having a flexible degree, one that can open up and spread over various fields, research areas, and careers.
