Service Project: Imagination Library

021820-ImagLib

As your chapter moves into what promises to be an unprecedented 2020-2021 academic year, Sigma Tau Delta recognizes that chapter life, including events, fundraising, and service efforts, will look markedly different from past years. Sigma Tau Delta would like to encourage all of our chapters to begin the year considering how they might continue to support our ongoing partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. We certainly understand that the COVID-19 health pandemic likely will interrupt your fundraising plans or make donating money more difficult, but it is important now, more so than ever, that we continue doing our part to put books in the hands of children.

As members of Sigma Tau Delta, you don’t need to be reminded of how literacy can open doors, create opportunities, and inspire communities to be great. Sigma Tau Delta’s mission is displayed regularly in our commitment to scholarship and service on the chapter level. On a larger scale, Student Leadership works toward the same goal, promoting literacy to all, which is why they encourage chapters to help us support the Imagination Library as the focus for this year’s service project. Let us come together now in this time of social distancing to create a sense of community as we work together as a Society to further childhood literacy efforts.

Dolly Parton began the Imagination Library in 1995 to encourage early childhood literacy in her home county in East Tennessee. The goal was to provide high-quality, age-appropriate books to all children, regardless of their family’s financial situation, from infancy to kindergarten. Since then, the Imagination Library has mailed over 120 million books to children in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia!

During the coming months, Student Leadership will be sharing a series of videos on our YouTube channel focusing on a variety of topics integral to hosting virtual fundraising events and continuing to perform community service during the pandemic. Please contact us with any topics you specifically would like to see addressed.

All money raised will be recorded by Sigma Tau Delta, listed by chapter, and presented to the Imagination Library in a single payment. Checks made out to Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society may be mailed to the Sigma Tau Delta Central Office through May 24, 2021. Or you can contact the Central Office for information on how to make your donation via credit or debit card.

As members of Sigma Tau Delta, we strive to expand our creativity and our knowledge. It is now time to give back and spark imagination in the next generation of readers, writers, and dreamers by providing them with early access to books.
