Meet Alessandra Young

Alessandra Young is the 2021-2022 Far Western Region Student Representative. She is a senior majoring in English Literature and Political Science at the University of Redlands in California. She is also the 2021-2022 Secretary of the Upsilon Alpha Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta. Originally from Phoenix, AZ, she loves literature set in the Southwest and visiting the National Parks and historic towns that inspire it. She often spends her free time painting and scrolling through Booktok!

  2. I never leave the house without an audiobook or a podcast ready to play on the way.
  3. If I had to eat one food for the rest of my life, it would be fried rice (super versatile).
  4. Growing up, I was sure I would be an architect.
  5. I know every word to the song Eleanor Rigby” by The Beatles.
  6. The best gift I’ve ever received was my first laptop.
  7. My nickname in high school was Al.
  8. If you find me in the kitchen, I’m typically whipping up a frozen dinner as I am a terrible cook.
  9. I’m more of a reader.
  10. The best paper title I ever created was “Embracing Chaos: Interdisciplinarity and Its Offspring.”
  11. The literary place I’d most like to visit is Night Vale (fictional) or Bath, England.
  12. My dream job isĀ to be a university professor with the means to travel.
  13. An author I truly admire is V.E. Schwab.
  14. My go-to children’s book is The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke.
  15. The destination at the top of my travel bucket list is Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
  16. My favorite part of being an English Major is constantly experiencing that moment where my classmates are as enthusiastic as I am about the book before us and the discussions that follow.
  17. The last book I read was The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home by Jeffrey Cranor and Joseph Fink.
  18. My favorite book The Best American Nonrequired Reading anthology series because it always includes a piece I never would have picked up otherwise.
  19. My favorite place to buy books is Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, AZ.
  20. In 10 years, I’m betting that the big trend in literature will be multilingual books, like Junot Diaz‘s work.
  21. My first job was tutoring middle schoolers in Algebra and Geometry.
  22. The last book I bought was Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi, and I have read it.
  23. The celebrity I’d most like to spend a day with is Amal Clooney.
  24. If I could move anywhere in the world, I’d live in Brighton, England.
  25. My Hogwarts house is Slytherin!
