Meet the Deltans

Meet Carie King

Carie King is the Managing Editor of Publications for Sigma Tau Delta and a Chapter Advisor at The University of Texas at Dallas. She went to college as a math major and flipped to English so she could read great literature. Upon graduating (as a Sigma Tau Delta member, 1989), she began her career as a technical writer and medical editor. But with time, she determined to research her own interests. With that came graduate school and a new career. Now, she teaches rhetoric, writing, and communication and edits for fun.

  1. I chose to become an English Major because I fell in love with writing and language and wanted others to receive clear messages.
  2. My favorite part of being an English Major is using semi-colons!
  3. The last book I read was All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque.
  4. My favorite book series is The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.
  5. A book character I identify with is Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
  6. The last book I bought was the new (9th edition) MLA style guide (HA!), I have read it.
  7. My favorite book to movie adaptation is Emma.
  8. I’m more of a writer than a reader.
  9. My favorite style of writing is persuasive and technical writing.
  10. My go-to children’s book is Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney.
  11. My favorite childhood memory is family reunions (because we moved around a lot).
  12. Growing up, I was sure I would be a US Supreme Court Justice.
  13. My first job was technical writer for an aerospace engineer.
  14. My dream job is teaching and editing (and I do it!).
  15. I like to spend my free time gourmet cooking and playing JackBox with my children.
  16. The destination at the top of my travel bucket list is Rome, Italy.
  17. The literary place I’d most like to visit is Boston, MA, USA.
  18. If I could move anywhere in the world, I’d live in Dallas, TX (I am finally home!).
  19. If I was stranded on a desert island, the three things I would bring with me are my Bible, my cell phone (and I hope I have reception), and a good knife.
  20. The one song I could listen to on repeat is Amazing Grace.
  21. The best gift I ever received was a trip to the DMZ between North and South Korea (from my Dad).
  22. The best gift I’ve ever given is a conducting baton to my daughter, who is now a conductor!
  23. If you find me in the kitchen, I’m typically whipping up creme brulee, boeuf bourguignon, quiche, . . . I love to cook!
  24. If I could try any food from a book or series, it would be Turkish delight from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis.
  25. The author (dead or alive) I’d most like to spend a day with is Louisa May Alcott.
